View Full Version : Septicemia - Dang!

I finally figured out what has been lingering in my 135 gallon tank ever since I set it up.

I initially started this tank with a handfull of SAE's I bought from a store that I have had mixed luck with. I lost every single one of them within 6 weeks to various symptoms (all of which point to a Septicemia infection). I didnt clue into this at first and the tank has been running for quite some time now. I've reviewed all of my fish deaths in the tanks history (there havent been many) and they all appear to be the same symtoms

- Popeye
- Dropsy
- Internal Hemorage

I am starting treatment today using Maracyn II ($75 Canadaian worth of medication, YOUCH).

I was able to note several fish that are showing signs of infection and I am concerned about the potential for losing them. The affect fish are as follows;

- Gold Gourami - worst off, a couple red streaks in body near tail, red patch under gill plate (I don't expect this fish to recover)
- Moonlight Gourami - Discoloured spot on one side, the scales arent shiny anymore
- Tiger Botia - One eye is cloudy
- Clown Loach - both eyes are cloudy
- Clown Loach (different) - Red Streak near tail, red patch under gill plate
- Yoyo Loach - Scratching, DEFINATELY not Ick (treated in QT for several days, no cysts seen at all in 2 weeks)

I am hoping that I can save everyone, although I suspect the Gold Gourami and possibly one clown might die. Do my chances look good for saving the rest of the tank?

Ok....... the store I was going to buy my Maracyn II at closed due to a bomb threat....

Hopefully they will open by the end of my shift...

P.S. - Bomb threat was cleared as "safe", I may be demanding, but I'm not insensitive :-)

Sorry to go off topic here--someone threatened to blow up a pet store? Weird! I've only ever heard of bomb threats to schools (around finals, every year) and banks.

Sorry about the septicemia. It's pretty rare for it to show up in a home tank...Usually the pet store catches and treats the fish. I don't think I'd be going back to that store for live stock. And, I would definitely setup a quarantine tank...Just in case!

Good luck!

I have stopped buying from that store already for other reasons..... And I actually have 2 other Q Tanks, this infection was lingering from the fish I initially cycled the tank with months ago and has been hopping from host to host, I just never put two and two together...

I started treating today and the tanks inhabitants perked up and had a better appaetite. I will be monitoring them closely for the next week.

just for the heck of it..... do you vacuum regularly? not to second guess you but bacterial problems seem to love the substrate from what i have seen..... vacuuming good might be something else to consider doing as well as the medicine. i would say stir up the substrate a little so the medicine can get in it deeper in case the substrate is harboring some leftovers too. *but* if there is a problem in it, unless you are using the vacuum to take away the debri you could very well have a bigger problem and more deaths on your hands.

just something to consider.....

Substrate is cleaned weekly, although not too deeply. This tank is fairly heavily planted along the gravel so debris get caught in the plants and sucked out by the filters.

My Nitrates stay between 5-10ppm, and I"m changing 50% water weekly in this beast.

This tank has never done as well as my other planted tanks however, my lighting is way under what it should be so the plants arent in a growing frenzy.

At the end of the month I will have the new lights and I can see about improving the plant situation. Healthy plants = Healthy fish.

Well, they found a "bomb" on the corner of the street by teh store. It turned out to be an empty pipe (after the bomb squad blew it up, heh). During the comotion though a bank 2 blocks away was robbed.

Who says canada isnt exciting :-)

Well... Entering Day three of treatment with little signs of improvement.

Has anyone had any epxerience treating this kin dof infection in tropical fish? The last time I had to beat this bug it was for a tank of goldfish....

I'm probably being impatient, I guess I'm just worried about this tank...

The same thing happened here in my area a couple months ago... But the bomb was real, although small...
