Hey all, second post on the salty side, But I'm curious about something. I am trying to get an equipment list on a nano-reef all setup, but I don't know what I'm supposed to use as far as filter on reef setup since SW and FW are two diffrent eco-systems.
I plan on using a 20 gallon high tank, just to let you guys know.

20 - 30lbs of live rock. That will provide your filtration..

Along with some powerheads...look for 20+ times turnover gph-wise, so....400gph or more.

next stupid question, is a refugium needed?

Refugiums are not a "need" to have part of a reef, there are many great reef systems here that dont have one..Its more a case of if you can do one, then do it, if not, then dont worry too much about it...You can always add one further down the road. Of course, the benfits of the refugium are good like pod growth and nutrient export etc etc

P.S None of your questions are stupid, please dont think they are..

Agree with Niko, you can use a extenal HOB filter for mechanical and chemical filtration also, just make sure to clean very regularly, like once a week as far as the mechanical portion goes. Good luck with your new set-up.

Another option to look at is a HOB fuge instead of trying to plumb in an external one.
