Could someone suggest some small colorful African cichlids I could put in a 29g? I know nothing about them and the sheer amount of them is somewhat overwhelming.

A pair of apistos.

A trio of shell dwellers.

A single angel.

Some keyholes.

would be a great tank for some tanganyikan shell dwellers. have a look at the stocking suggestions here www.cichlidforum.com and you'll get some ideas.

i generally would not reccomend that you put mbuna in there - its a little small for them unfortunately...if you could go bigger, to a 55 gallon it would be perfect for a lot more than the shell dwellers, but have a look at them and see what you think.

trio of shellies

with either a pair of julidochromis or calvus could work

however, I would go with just the shellies...less cramped (less territorial disputes) and much better chance of fry survival...

OR

trio of rams/apistos
