I have a 40 gallon tank and I am slowly adding fish to it after having it completely cycled. I have listed the fish that I plan to have in it in the end. Would it be overstocked for my 40 gallon to have this many fish in it?

8 Neon tetras
4 Peppered Corys
3 Long Finned Zebra Danios
2 Cherry Barbs
2 Honey Sunset Gouramis

It is a good stocking list. I'd add 4 more Corydoras. I'd scrap the Barbs or the Danios and up the remaining ones numbers for a larger school.

I would choose just the barbs, tetras or danios and up the school to 10-12 or so

Also add a few more cories

I agree with jpappy. It'll look better to have a larger school of one type than a couple of these, a couple of those. And corys LOVE to be in larger groups!! Enjoy.

There is a difference in size between tetras, danios and the barbs, the latter of which grow much larger than the rest and are far more aggressive fish. You could easily do 10 tetras, 6 danios (don't think they school like the tetras), 6 cories, 2 gouramies. I think you could also do 6 barbs in there and you'd still be OK but I prefer to understock that slightly overstock, especially with schooling fish that require the space.

I would choose either the cherries or the danios, as you don't have schooling groups of either. 6 danios or 6 cherries (2m/4fm), 8 neons, 6 cories, and 3 gouramis (1m/2fm) is what I would do. You will get better colours in the male cherries if there are females, and maybe even spawning.

Cherry barbs are not nippy to other fish, and hardly nippy to each other. They rarely exceed 2", and are usually a bit under. Basically, they get as big as danios.
