I went to petland to get me sum apple snails :)
i get there and see this pretty white one with a Blue foot... i got him.. but when the guy was putting him in the bag he pulled on him kinda hard to get him off the glass... and im not sure but it looks like he pulled part of him from the snail ... Can anyone post a pic of a NON damaged snail interior so i can compare?
Also can someon post a pic of an "open" door and "closed" door.
One of my snails isnt moving.. at all. He doesnt stink lol someone told me when they die they smell.
But his "door" isnt hanging open.. its just shut -ish.
Oh and i have driftwood in my tank and corydora... will the driftwood lowering the ph hurt my snails.?
Oh and one more thing.. Will he eat all my plants? I have elodea Both kinds of Hornwort, argentina sword, Java moss, purple lily, aponogeton.
Thanks, im new to this snail thing..

Welcome to the snaily side
I would take the "damaged" snail back if you can, And if they don't, talk to a manager. That is unacceptable.
If the snail is shuttish, and doesn't smell, give him/her time to adjust.
And no, they wont eat plants. They will snack on algea, but I would feed them algae wafers and other vegetables.
Also, monitor your PH levels, Don't go below 7.0, otherwise the shells may start to erode. And despite your PH level, add some cuttlebone to filter.

What I would be concerned about with the handling of your snail is a mantle collapse, similar to a collapsed lung in us. Its often normal for a snail to hang half out of his shell...if you don't notice him/her perking up in the next day or so,I would be concerned. Driftwood is fine in tanks with snails and assuming they are the most commonly found snails (pomacea bridgessi) they should not bother your plants beyond grazing on dying or dead plants. I would give the snail time to acclimate, if you are at all concerned, make a post on the discussion forum at applesnail.net to get more in depth info.

this exact thing happened to me- I am finding out that most stores selling fish know little to nothing about snails let alone how to handle them. In my case the guy reached in and pulled the snail off the tank wall with such force I'm amazed he didn't rip him out of his shell completely! My snail never did act right and died about a week later. By that time I had read up on them more so when i went to buy my ivory, I instructed the worker how to gently retrieve the snail. So far I haven't met one pet store employee who knows much about snails at all.
Ivory has been here about 2 months and is doing great in spite of her encounter with a nippy angel fish!
hope your snail does alright-

Another thing you can do for the potentially damaged snail is to put him in a shallow dish of treated water so that the water just covers his shell. This seems to have some healing "powers" with injured snails.

You should report Petland to the ASPCA for animal abuse.

i got home from school and he was floating hanging out.. and had fuzz on him.. he smelled funny..
I assumed he was dead and threw him away..
My other snail seems to be out and about though.
I talked to petland , they said that i should have asked for another one when he pulled it off...
Im never shopping there again, and im going to petco to get snails from now on.

Our petco is where we always went -it was 5 minutes from us and we always got wonderful fish from them- before I got into inverts though, they went out of business!:-(
I miss having them around- they guaranteed their fish and snails for 2 weeks and stood by their promise.
IMO, a reputable aquarium store will happily let you return because they want you to succeed in your hobby-
I hope you have a better experience there.

some of these employees arent supposed to be around fish. ive seen em chasing fish around a tank with a net and almost smashing them into a wall. if they dont own the store, they are probably not into fish...
