View Full Version : too many bristlenose pleco babies
Hi,
I have a proud mum and dad, they have produced about 120 bristlenose babies in about 8 weeks. Dad is currently sitting on the fresh batch of eggs that are due to hatch in about 3 days.
Does anyone know whether it's ok for them to keep breeding over and over? Will it harm them cos ever thime a new batch venture from dad's cave, mum dives in and lays more eggs.
I don't have a problem with having lots of babies as I have a nursery tank and their no trouble to sell the the pet shops.

I don't think that it is harmful for bristlenoses to have repeated broods, because they don't provide the supplemental nutrition that Discus, and, to a lesser extent, Archocentric cichlids do (nutritious body slime). As long as Mom and Dad Bristlenose still look to be in peak shape, I would advocate letting them breed to their hearts' content.
Thanks for the advice. Dad has another batch of tiny babies at the mo. He's very good with them and no one dare go near.

How much do you get for each, and how many different stores do you supply? If it is as easy and possibly profitable.... hmmm.

Not sure how much I will get for them, abot 3 shops want them. I have in the region for 150 babies that are between 0.5 inches and 1.5inches and a new batch about to leave the nest.
I need to phone around to find out how much I can get for them as my local shop will pull a fast one. I know they sell them for £5 each but not sure how much I should ask for mine. Any Ideas?

Don't ask for too much. And go with store credit if you can. You don't want to be a pain to the LFS or they will quickly say no and you will have bunches of babies with no home.
For one, if they can make a good profit by buying them for a small amount each, they are more likely to buy from you when the second brood it ready. Plus, this route, they are more likely to give you cash!
Go with credit when practical becuase its easier for the store to handle, and they don't lose money. Not very appealing, but a good alternative if your worried about finding homes for them.
Good luck!

You're lucky to have them breeding over and over again. Can you tell more on your tank setup / tankmates ?

I would also like to know as I have never had any of my fish spawn, but bristlenoses would be awesome. I only have on now, but I would be more than happy to get another.
Hi All,
48x15x15 tank. 1 internal fluval filter, 1 external Eiheim filter filled with different types of gravel. 1 large castle, where dad has made home in the top turret and no one dare go in there, this is also right under the curtain of bubble from the Eiheim. Other small castle at other end, big chunk of lump wood, various large shells and ships. Water reeds are the only plant that I manage to keep without them eating it .
Tank mates include
approx 20 swords, 2 coolies, 2 weather loach, 1 cory, 1 poor guarami (girlfriend just died:( ), 10 mollies, 8 zebra danios, 8 harliquins, 5 phantom tetras, 20 rummy nose tetras, 16 neons, 1 large sailfine pleco, 1 spotted spiny nose eel. Cant think now lol.
Don't know how I've got it right I'm affraid, just make sure I do 1/3rd water changes every week. I don't fuss with checking the water all the time unless I have a prob.
Temp is kept at 80 as I have had a huge prob with white spot, every time I but new.
I also have a nursery tank in my kitchen full of molly, swords and guppie babies, plus now my approx 150 babies plec's.
Feel free to ask any questions if you can think of something that I have'nt told you ok
