View Full Version : Stocking for a 55 gallon. Open to suggestions
Is there any aggressive cichlid that I can keep in a tank this size? Nothing from the african lakes...I don't know. I just want a more aggressive fish. I have 2 peaceful community tanks. I'm done with peaceful! Any suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks
Convicts are aggressive. So are Salvinis.:)
I heard that convicts are pretty prolific breeders. If I were to get convicts, would I get all convicts or is there another agressive cichlid that could hold it's on in a tank with a convict? My concern is getting convicts and having them breed on me =O. Hehe So many little concerns.

a pair of salvinis. thats what i was gonna do but i couldnt find any. also a single GT or JD or also a pair of severums.
Severums aren't really aggressive to me. With each other, yes, but I've never seen them being aggressive towards other fish.
If I were to get to severums would they have to be male/female, or 2 males or does it matter? I know sevrums aren't particularly aggressive but I know my lfs has them.

What are you going to buy? Juveniles or adults? For a tank that size, I'd keep a male and a female.
I plan to buy juviniles if I were to take the severum route. They also had a blood parrot. Would a severum and bloodparrot be compatible? Or would the blood parrot bully? Sorry for going all over the map.

Blood parrots are generally a cross of severum and red devil or red midas. Personal experience: When my 2 BPs were with the severums, they'd go back and forth with chasing; never had any major harmful aggression.

It's not easy determining their genders when young. They're fast growers though at which by the time they reach 5 inches, growth slows down. Blood parrots and sevs can work but this seems pushing for a 55g. I'd ditch the BP off the list.
Logy, the sevs are hardly really aggressive however they are fun to watch. Not exactly the type of cichlid you would want but if you like them, go for it.
Soo I just wanted to let everyone know that I decided on a Green Severum and a Firemouth. The Severum is around 2-3 inches and the firemouth is maybe a little more than an inch. The Severum has been shy from the get go, but I expected that. He'll hide in one of the caves until he see's the little firemouth out and about. Than he'll just follow the firemouth. Doesn't nip or harass. Just follows. They both seem so curious and I know once they get comfortable they are going to be some pretty awesome little fish.
Thanks for all your help and info regarding my choices everyone.
