Ok... I'm getting SO tired of this crap its not funny...

last few weeks I"ve been getting INCESSANT onslaughts of red slime algae in the tank.

so I changed some stuff

1) I've cut down almost ALL food into the tank. I target feed my clown

2) I do 10% water changes EVERY TWO days. using RO water from the local water Depot. (it IS RO water I've checked)

3) I tried a protien skimmer but the thing a: doesn't fit in the tank.. and b: stopped working after the first 10 days... it doesn't blow enough air to push the bubbles up? know what I mean?

4) I cut the light cycle in half! so the tank gets around 5 hours of white light a day

5) Using a 1/4" piece of tubing I siphon out as much of the red slime as I am doing WC in the tank.

6) Some of my clean up crew has died. 2 astrea snails. However I DO have 4 hermit crabs, cleaner shrimp, and one astrea snail left.

7) I put a second power head into the tank to help circulate water.

my nitrate level in the tank is starting to climb..........

everyday I go to work, then I come home to a RED FREAKING TANK.
its on the glass, on the LR ITS EVERYWHERE!

Its spawning little bubbles now... which I'm guessing are MORE nitrates...

how long can I expect my fish to live in this crap??

I'm getting ready to fire it all into the trash... I'm SO freaking sick of this crap.

how do I get rid of it??????????????????????????????????

signed,

Frustrated.

thanks.

would you be willing to post a pic, I think I have the same thing that you do. They tell me it could be red tide in mine.

Sounds like your trying everything. I dont have much experience with it because well actually I dont know why but I like to think its because my water quality is so good.

You say you've put a second powerhead in - what GPH in total do you have now?

What is your nitrAte reading and also your phosphate reading.

When I had it (massive outbreak) I cut my lights for a full 24 hrs then put them back on for 5 hours a day.

Have you actually tested the RO water for nitrAtes and phosphates - they may need to change their filters?

Just found an old picture of mine when I finally started battling it http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=103818

I just moved that second power head over to the left side of the tank.

it points out forwards now same as the stock "intank" one does.

as for GPH flow....

not sure of what the stock one is, but the second power head flows 10gph.

as for levels I will let you know shortly.... I'm testing in a little bit.

For fish only you need 10 x turnover. I'm assuming this is your 14 gal tank, if so you need a minimum of 140gph. If you're doing reef you need 25 x turnover (350gph).

um... at 350gph with my lil tank???

wouldn't that turn into the equivalent of flushing?? there is TONS of water movement in the tank.

and now that I've moved the second power head over I have no visible "dead spots" in the tank.
