dirt for planted tank

i have heard of doing this, useing soil/dirt for the bottom of planted tank and then putting rock over the top. anyone use this method and if so and recommendations. Thanks

My comment on dirt: dirt is different every where you go. Dirt may work well for some person in place and cause really bad side effects for someone in another place. Dirt can do tricky stuff to your water chemistry.

i wouldnt think about layering until you have mastered plants a little more. i wont even do it since i am always changing things around.
