Let me start by saying that I know little to nothing about breeding SNAILS for profit so this entire post will be directed at shrimp.

First lets look at the shrimp you have access to. You say you can get red (I am assuming Cherry Shrimp, Neocaridina heteropoda), Orange Shrimp (A Caridina Sp.) and Blue Shrimp (unknown). Lets talk about Blue Shrimp first.

Blue Shrimp is a generic name often times given to shrimp that are not blue at all or are blue by unnatural techniques. The offspring of these shrimp will not be blue. There are only 2 “True” breeding blue shrimp and one is the Blue Tiger Shrimp (very expensive, difficult to breed, and only a percentage of them are blue) and the Blue Pearl Shrimp (easier to breed, but still new to the hobby and not all that popular yet).

Orange Shrimp is a Caridina species similar to the Amano Shrimp. The young hatch as larva and will not survive in freshwater. They need saltwater to grow. This species is not for the beginner and will not be able to be bred for profit for under $500.00 in my opinion.

Cherry Shrimp are easy to breed. They are easy to care for, so much so that there are tons of sellers already flooding the market with them.

So, how do you start a shrimp business with $200.00? The first and most important factor in making money with shrimp is to have a reputation as a good seller and somebody who is knowledgeable about shrimp. Set up the best aquarium set up you can for $150.00 and use the other $50.00 for some Cherry Shrimp.

When you have a breeding population established start to sell your shrimp on forums and auction sites. This will not make you much money at all, but will get you familiar with the shipping processes and start to build your reputation. Continue doing this until you have recouped your $200.00 (remember to include all costs such as electricity, food, chemicals and what not).

Now that you have your $200.00 back, do the same thing with another species. Pick a species that will be popular in the future (like Blue Pearl Shrimp). Repeat the above process.

Now that you know how to breed and sell shrimp you need to set up some sort of storefront. Use the $200.00 to pay for a domain name and web server for a year. Build a website and start to attract people to it.

All in all, it is not an easy business to break into. If you have the patients and don’t rush things it can work!

wow, sounds like a great thing for me to start in the future.
and also, about the blue shrimp-----let me start. My friend bought a tank offf of a friend, and he gave him a lot of shrimp. these included cherry and chocolate miniline, a less popular species. Now its been a couple of months and the shrimp are starting to breed themselves out. Now his tank consists of yellow, green, black, red, and BLUE minline. I am pretty sure that the miniline are a variation of the cherry, but the original seller of the shrimp disappeared. Is This a rare and 1 time kind of shrimp? the person my friend got the tank off also got rid of all his tanks and all his shrimp. CHeck google images for a pic of the choclate miniline, but i doubt youll find any of the other colors i mentioned above. (note, the blue shrimp look just like a blue cherry shrimp)

another option would be to sell to the lfs. just remember your not going to get rich doing this. its a hobby if you can get it to pay for its self thats a very good thing. i still have spent more on my set ups then i have sold. not even including water and electricity.

:iagree: You're probably not going to be making a whole lot of money, unless you can invest in a large setup with a variety of species.

If you're thinking of breeding snails, Pomacea bridgesii (brigs or mystery snails) are probably the most popular. Any snails in the apple snail family (such as brigs) will require a permit from the USDA for any shipping across state lines.

Red Cherry Shrimp are extremely prolific, so it is not hard at all to establish a breeding size population given a large enough tank. Another species to think of would be Crystal Red's or Blacks (Bee Shrimp). They will breed and grow in complete fw and prices are coming down on them, making even the mid-upper grades fairly affordable.

Good luck!
