Hello everyone,
My new clean up crew just finished quarantine and will be getting added to the 55g tank tomorrow, I chose an interesting group of friends to be taksed with the algae clean up. I got 1 Hillstream Loach, 1 CAE, and a few snails. I havnt heard of nor have I seen alot of the hill stream loaches, Why is this?

CAE's should be avoided at all costs. They can become extremely nasty as they mature. As for hillstream loaches, temperature should not exceed 76 degrees Fahrenheit and oxygen must always be maximized to ensure longer lifespan. As for the availability, the weather in their native habitat could play a major role in their population increase and decrease. Not all have been bred in captivity so most of these are wild-caught. A few however like the Sewellia lineolata have been bred among several enthusiasts who keep them. A river specialist tank where powerful flows and high levels of oxygen are encouraged will encourage them to breed more than the average community tank. These are labelled as Borneo suckers, Hongkong pleco, butterfly pleco, etc by misinformed dealers when in fact, these are not plecos but loaches of the Balitorinae genus.

More information can be found in http://www.loaches.com.

I agree, take the CAE back if you can. They're horrible aquarium fish.

so is that to say I should add an air stone to my 55?

Towards your question, I think people get the hillstreams, then don't take care of them properly.

Ok, what are you trying to say?

I am going to add another powerhead, and an airstone(as much as I hate the look of one) This Hillstream Is cool and worth it

its funny. i have 2 CAE in my 120. never seen them bother a single fish before.

nothing is going to be as good as your tlc. gravel vac and water changes will be your best friend.
