i just bought a "patch" of micro swords. but it is planted onto those green things you scrub dishes with. kinda like a spong but only harder and more dense. anyways, it's giong to be impossible to remove the patch from it because it will definitly tear all the roots. how exactly should i do this? can i just put in my aquarium and put some gravel over the pad? thanks

Maybe use a super sharp utility knife to cut off as much as possible then not worry about the rest?

I wouldn't keep the clump together - more likely to rot, not get enough light in the middle, or stifle each other. As someone else said, cut off as much as you can with sharp scissors/ knife, then chop up what you have left into smaller sections. Don't worry about cutting a few roots. In fact, cutting the tips of the roots will encourage new growth. Don't cut too much though, just the very tips, to be on the safe side.

thanks for the tips. i seperated the stuff. took off all the dish scrubing pad.

some of the runners i cut off runners and the end tips are streaming now. there's some dead hair algae on the sworsd but im sure when i add some fish, they'll pick em off.

I believe that stuff is wool. Wool is the only natural material that will, when wet, hold in heat. It's very coarse and a real pain to deal with. I found that if I get a bucket of water and swish it around vigorously in that it comes loose after a while.
