Why can't you use an external one or a sump?

They arent bad per say but arent as great. The reason I would like one is because you dont have to worry about an overflow.

I have a wet/dry sump, but this looked easier than converting the middle of it to a refugium and I'd like to have one just for growing macros and pods.
The problem with our sump is the right baffle on the middle section is open at the bottom 4" or so, running the water thru the rock rubble which sits on an egg crate and then over into the right section where the return pump is. So I'm not sure how to fix it so the water flows over the middle section instead of under.
