Hi gang ! Being a noob, I just watched the video on how to plant an aquarium, and I have a question. Do I need more than the substrate (sand or gravel on top) that I have in the bottom of my tank, or is the substrate alone just fine ? The substrate that I have was sold to me knowing that I was going to be planting live plants (I can't remember the name of it, sorry). I never thought that I might need more than just the substrate, but thinking about it now, SUBstrate is pretty self explanatory ! Guess I'm a dope as well as a noob !! Thanx for your help ! :headbang2::duh::newbie: Just found what I have: Florabase.

i've never had anything more than regular pea gravel in any of my tanks, and my planted tanks have all been very successful. :)

I have plain sand in my tank, all my plants are doing well.

you also want to make sure your gravel is 2-4 inch deep.

Regular substrate is fine. I use root tabs for some of my plants, but it's not necessary.
