from this site.... http://www.aquariumfish.net/home.htm

Appropriate Home for a sword....
In an aquarium with at least 15 gallons of water, an External Power Filter with a BIO-Wheel, 1/4 inch or less of gravel, and an Aquarium Heater adjusted to between 78 and 82 degrees F. Click here for more about warm water aquariums. Like most livebearers Swordtails will do better with 1 Tablespoon of Aquarium Salt per 5 gallons of water. Click here for more about Aquarium Salt.

Does this still apply?? I thought it was known that fish do not need salt?

Swordtails do not need salt and they aren't brackish water species either.

Petsmart will also mark swordtails with "requires aquarium salt", but I guess it is because the petsmart system (all tanks connected) has salt in it, and it would mean you have to acclimatize your fishes slowly!

I have swordtails too. No salt needed. They do fine without and still breed like crazy :)
