Im currently the owner of a 12 gallon jbj dx, and i came across the 28 gallon nano hqi with stand for about 800 bucks
my question is as follows should i keep with my 12 or move to the 28
for the extra money.

pros
ill be able to support a deeper sandbed
the seperate cords for the night and day lights
more options for fish
a skimmer
metal halides
wave maker

cons
bigger water changes
price tag
curious about the skimmer noise (im quite happy with the noise level i have now)

not huge on the open back system

You could do a bigger tank for a lot less money than $800 with sand, llive rock and livestock.

I'm doing a 29g right now, debating on lighting and rock but it'll be probably have about $500 invested total by the time I'm done. I don't DYI either. Or buy used, normally. All of that will be new.

yeah the lowest i found here for the tank is about 550, then addon the another 200 for the stand.

If your going to upgrade, get the biggest sized tank you can get that your money can handle. IMO

You must be looking for a super tank for it to be that much. I could buy a 125g tank new for that much, and not a whole lot more than that for a stand

In answer to your question, is it worth it...probably. Water change will go from maybe 2 gallons a week to 5 gallons, which isn't really that big of an increase.

Skimmers on small tanks, I'm not a big fan of, but some swear by.

As Mandy said, though, I've also gone the DIY 29g route and am really happy.

29g tank ~$100...maybe less
175w metal halide setup $150
HOB fuge $50-100
Heater $20
ATO $100 (or less)

The rest is just wood and life. ;)

But, again, to answer your poll, I'm down with the 28g if you like the all in one...you could get a pair of clowns or go some other direction that you definitely could not in the 12g.

got back from the lfs, got a new coral and a new quote on the hqi from my main fish dude, 650 tank and stand, but he didnt say which stand it came with. but either way 150 off the original asking price is better. now got me thinking a little bit harder.
