Running filter without filter cartridge

I am in the middle of fishless cycling my 55G, and I plan to keep a Penguin filter on there for use in my 10G QT (when I need to use the QT I can take the Penguin and its bacteria and move to the 10G).

But, right now I have no filter cartridges for the Penguin. Is there any harm in running it like this for a few days until I get some cartridges? I figure that the bacteria is supposed to grow on the bio-wheel anyway, and with no fish in the tank there is no real waste being generated for the filter cartridge to stop.

I am guessing it should be fine, but just wanted to be certain.

Thanks.

It's OK, but in the long run, be aware that bacterial will live on the cart. too.

Yeah, I plan to get a pack of cartridges in the next few days. Just figured it would not do any harm to at least get some growing on the bio wheel. Not likely to need the 10G QT for a few weeks either at the very least.

Is there another filter on the 55? You will certainly get circulation and some bb growth...

if you have another filter in there, then you already have BB growing there.

It won't hurt the filter at all, remember when you take the PEN out & put in the QT, then you are essentially reducing the BB in the 55. (just watch the params when you do this) it all depends on the filters..
