I just noticed in my tank that my angel appears to be turning inside out. There is a reddish protrusion from the anus (it looks like a red fish egg, for lack of a better description). He is actually passing waste *through* this protrusion, almost like he was so constipated he turned himself inside out. I'm guessing this is a prolapsed rectum, but I'm not sure. Nor am I sure of the consequences....

I've dosed some epsom salt in the water to help if it is related to constipation.

Water params are fine (0/0/5). His diet consists of tetra color pellets, freeze-dried bloodworms, dried river shrimp, and frozen brine shrimp with spirulina (he gets the pellets the most frequently).

Attached are pics...

This happened really quickly as I was watching him swim around about an hour ago and no sign of this. He also additionally appears bloated (and did not earlier).

You can see from his tail clamped that he's not feeling so good, poor guy... I hope he's going to be okay.

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Intestinal prolapse. Fast for two days, feed lightly for the next week. Clean water is a must, a bare bottom quar tank should be used, with 50% water changes daily.

Bloodworms are a protein rich food, go easier on them, and add a little more veggies to the diet. With clean water you will probably avoid infection, add in a little luck & it will heal itself.

Thanks Tolak and Coler... this morning it has recessed completely. I'm still going to put him in the quar tank for a few days and monitor. And in general I'll cut the bloodworms down to a rarer treat.

excellent - that's great news; I meant to say above to isolate if possible and keep the decor in the Q tank very basic while the prolapse subsists; no e.g. driftwood...just some very smooth substrate and maybe a flowerpot for cover. you want nothing it could catch on or be irritated by.
