How do you get an anemone to detach its foot if its very secure in a rock crevice and has no intention of moving?

A good easy way is to direct flow directly at it..This should eventually un-nerve the nem, make it un-happy with its location and then start to move..That is then your time to move it yourself when its mobile..

Yeah...good luck with that.

Lots of patience is what it takes.

I just did upgrade my lighting. Why, what happened to Grins??

I'll try aiming a powerhead at it, thanks!

Jess - check Grins' blog (one of the best here) for the gory details.

You just have to make it unhappy. The powerhead trick should work, if not then just iritate it by either shutting the lights off for extended period of time, killing flow, taking a knife and cutting it off... JK!

Rubbing ice on the foot some times works as does a credit card or even taking a chisel and scraping the liverock below the foot being careful not to hurt the foot to pry a portion of the foot off the rock so you can slowly peel its foot off. I was lucky enough to attend a presentation held by Anthony Calfo last weekend and watched how to clone an anemone by cutting it and he used the chisel method. I cant wait to clone my first nem, lil nervous tho its a dinner plate sized bta and I certainly dont want to make any mistakes and loose it...

put tank water in the freezer for lik an hour, then turkey baste the foot with the frigid water.

2-3 blasts, and homeboy will be free floatin!

That can be quite damaging to the anemone. This is going to guarantee the anemone is being blasted with a huge temperature, salinity and pH change.

I would just try adjusting flow for now. Possibly try moving the rock to a lower area, away from other rocks. You can try placing a ceramic tile (upside down) near it and hope that it crawls onto that when it decides to move.

Placing window screen over the tank may also help. The anemone may go searching for more light.

Ok I tried aiming the power head right at it and it still has made no attempt to move. It only shrank a little...so then I tried using ice cubes on its foot but then it only went down further into the rock

I finally got it out after taking the rock out and turning it upside down, the anemone slowly slid out of the hole enough for me to detach the foot. The LFS only gave me a couple dollars credit. They said they've been giving their condys away for free recently because they've been eating too many fish! So anyways, glad I got mine out finally and thank you for the tips. =D
