Dont own the filter, but you can try to clean it? re glue the housing, or wrap it in a ugly sound deadening foam? sorry.

ditch it, its what I did, I had a TF 20, thing sucked.

Nice canister filter would be a better option, XP1 or XP2.

I agree, ditch that filter for sure. You didn't say anything about tank size so i'm not sure which one to recommend you as i have experience with many different filters. A canister would definately be the way to go. Much quieter and fairly low maintenance. The hang on filters do their job ok, just not as efficiently as the canisters. My complaint about the Top Fin and the Whispers is that you are really only getting two kinds of filtration unless there is a sponge, however, the overall design of the thing is kinda crappy. I would highly recommend the investment in a good filter from the start. You won't regret it. Keep in mind it is always better to overfilter than underfilter your tank. Also remember that your filter should be more like an aid in between cleanings, don't totally depend on it. Regular filter cleaning will also help to ensure that everything is running smoothly. Hope this helps.

First off, I would try taking apart the filter, cleaning the impeller and makign sure nothing is in the impeller housing. My new HOB filter had that problem......Gave it good cleaning and found a tiny pebble lodged.

If a good cleaning doesnt help, ditch it. Theres lots of really reliable modern filters, so your choices are endless. I would recommed a canister, like the XP3 or XP2, depending on your tank.

My whisper 40-60 on my 15 gallon quarantine tank started getting very loud a few months ago. I tore it apart and found out somehow the rod on the impeller was slightly bent. It was just enough to cause really loud vibrations.

As it still works and is in my garage I plugged it back in and left it.
