View Full Version : Question for Python users....

Python users... I'm new to the whole Python thing. So far, I've only used it to fill the newly established tank.

So, when I'm doing water changes, how do I treat new water being put in the tank? After vacuuming? Do I pour into a bucket and add chlorine-remover? I can't imagine I can just pour directly into the tank. So, how do you do water changes?

I just adjust the temperature and add the water straight to the tank. As the water is going into the tank I drop the drops into the stream of tap water. The fish don't seem to mind at all, most of them seem to like to play in the stream.

Yes, what Alex said...

Temperatures are important.
Keep the "new" water the same temp as the tank water....

That's my procedure also. I pour a little bit of the total amount in at a time until I'm done. Also, make sure the diffuser/gravel screen is on the end and make the water go through that. The more you break the stream of water the more chlorine dissipates out.

Thanks for the input!

I did as suggested last night, and did a water change while adding the dechlorinator in-stream. Worked just fine. Man, I don't know why I used buckets for so long. :D

Didn't even think of that rsava. Good tip! Thanks!

Oh and Alex, you were right, a bunch of the fish seemed to be hanging out in or near the stream of incoming water. :)

Diffuser/gravel screen??? I did not know that a Python came with this, where on the Python is it located? I do not see it on mine.

May have been a poor choice of words. My gravel vac attachment has a piece on the end that keeps the gravel and small fishies from getting sucked up into it. It is plastic part that looks kind of like this on the bottom:

\/\/\/

and has slots in it.

I've looked on their website and can not find a pic. Perhaps they don't come with that part anymore (???), mine is kind of old. Or I may not have an actual python but a knockoff.

My Python is over 6 years old and I didn't get the screen attachment, I've never even heard of it. Maybe you have one of the Lee's water changers. That would be a good extra piece, I nearly sucked out an Apistogramma steindachneri fry last week.

Thats it!! Mines a Lee's, they call it a "Fish Saving" cleaning claw. Wonderful little attachment.

Yea, the Lee's aqua vac. I had it for about a year before I finally got a python about 2 weeks ago. The python is so much better, the hose is much more flexible, it has higher quality parts, it doesn't have that annoying screen(which I sawed off of the other one), and it has a universal adapter which I need.

Yes, the Lee's hose does tend to get stiff over time. But I do like the screen. I just plunge that thing right into the gravel and no worries about sucking up gravel. Or the little fishies in the 55G.
And as far as the parts, I've read posts from people here and on USENET about replacing the original parts on the Python but have only had to replace the faucet adapter on mine. 5yrs, 5 tanks and still going strong. Darn, probably shouldn't have said that, now it's gonna break for sure.
