So I am going to need to buy a vacuum either today or tomorrow and was hoping some of you could help identify the type I should get for ease of use and effectiveness. Since there is a Petco close to me, I will probably go there. I see a few at $30 or so, will those do? All self priming and such? Thanks much for the input.

I would spend the extra money for a python. You can get a 25ft one for around 29 dollars on petsmart.com, or a 50ft one for about 46 dollars on the site. They are so much easier then vacuuming up the water into a bucket. The python attaches to your sink and drains and fills the tank.

Python is the most recommended. I have a "look-a-like" product that does the job and was cheaper.

if you decide to go with a standard style siphon, just go to a hardware store and buy some tubing, and i'm sure you can figure out how to make one yourself that costs like 20x less.

I have had numerous tanks over the years. I have had quite a few vac's of various styles. I recently switched over to the Python (thanks to the folks here) and am at a loss for words as to why I didn't use this before. The Python is GREAT! :thm:

It has a slower syphon rate then the regular ones you dump into a bucket so you can get a thorough cleaning, No more carrying heavy buckets, Refills slower than dumping in a bucket and even reduces the time it takes to do a cleaning and water change.

I bought mine online from http://www.drsfostersmith.com/ (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/)
I bought the 50ft kit and then a longer tube (24" tall tank) and it came with the brass fitting. There was a note stating that due to the amount of complaints about the plastic adapter that they are upgrading their new sets with the brass fitting.

I Highly recommend just getting a Python.
