View Full Version : What does a sleeper gobie eat?
I got one 2 days ago. Its not really going for the frozen myisis shrimp. Does it only eat what it sifts out of the sand? And if it does is there stuff i need to add to the sand? Here is a pic i got of saltwaterfish.com of what it looks like. There is no info on what it eats tho.http://www.saltwaterfish.com/site_11_03/images/992_goldenheadedsleepergobymx28.jpg

I'd not worry too much if you have only had it 2 days. But in general they should be taking to the mysid you mentioned as well as other carnivore fooods. It would also be good to have a healthy sandbed and a refugium to replenish it yes.

Mine sifts the sand all of the time, but occasionally will come out and take some of the prepared food that I feed the tank during my evening feedings.. The biggest thing with these guys is that they are both a burrower and and a sifter. So you need to get sand that won't damage their gills when sifting sand but yet coarse enough to stand up to their digging and tunnel system. Mine has bunkers all over the tank and rearranges anything that he can fit into his mouth or move to where he wants it placed.
I went to look this morning only to find him dead. Man this sucks!! I guess lesson learned. I did'nt know alot about this fish but i still don't feel like it is all my fault seeing i only had him 2 days. My other fish seem to be ok still. I'm taking my water in to get tested tomarrow just to make sure everything is O.K.

Boggs he very well could have been malnourished from the LPS or was sick or just stressed out. I see these fish in inappropriate tanks all the time, normally with a CC substrate from which they get absolutely no nutrition. I almost bought a baby the other day just because of that..
They really are a great fish though.. I love mine.

I would agree with that....Sand sifting Goby's main food should come from a good matured sandbed, rather than relying on prepared feeds....Crushed coral is also a bad idea with sandsifting fish like these or jawfish...They ideally need a fine grade of sand as the crushed coral can, and does, play havoc with this and can cause problems further down the road...

It was quite sad actually.. I may even go back and buy him but I don't think my system is large enough to support 2. This little guy was about a fifth the size of the one in my tank and trying to pick up pieces of crushed coral to eat..

Even worse.. They are a wonderful fish though.. Edna is just funny at times.. The thing you need to be aware of with these fish is that they are going to redecorate your sand bed to how they feel it should look.. I had to decide that she won the battle and I was giving up... ;)
