Well, I've decided to go for the 10 gallon marine reef aquarium with 1-2 fishies, live rock, and live sand. I suppose that if I ever decided to go bigger, I might be able to use the 10 gallon for a sump system. It's my first tank so I regret that it will be more maintenance than a bigger system but those bigger systems seem to get exponentially more expensive. I'll start small and see how it goes!

I'm hoping to get advice on the various components I will need to purchase. I'm looking for recommendations on:

lighting (prefer to go bright and not limit myself coral-wise)
protein filter
power head
chemical supplements
clean up crews do and don'ts
automatic top off systems
and anything else you can think of!

Any advice is really appreciated. Thanks so much!!

I'm totally inspired by one of the "sump" threads and am wondering how crazy it would be to put a sump/refugium (I don't know the difference between the two) with my new 10 gallon salt water reef tank??

i am thinking of doing a 5.5 gallon sump on my 10 gal. i am just trying to figure out how to do it with out drilling. i have a post going in the diy section. sorry to hijack. but i am having fun with my 10gal right now. here is what i have so far. 18lbs LR, 30lbs LS, AC30 HOB, 100wt heater,Zoo Med Power Sweep 214 Powerhead and aquatic gardens 200gph PH. as far as stocking right now i have one maroon clown and two unknow snails i got with my sand. i have about 1lbs of LRR in my HOB and a small chunck of cheato(mis spelled i think). it seems to be going good. hope this helps. good luck and thanks agian to ooja3k for inspiring my 10gal.

This is not hijacking...this is totally helpful. I'm not mechanically inclined and I'm going to have to buy, not DIY, something but perhaps your thread will help out my selection. Your picks for equipment are helpful too. What's a LRR and an HOB?

I'm still learning the lingo. But as soon as I know it, I shall only converse in acronyms.

LRR is live rock rubble and HOB is hang on back filter. the kind of filter that well hangs on the back of the tank. hope this helps

I totally copied and pasted your mechanical equipment choices into my "aquarium plan" word document. If you have any problems with those pieces, let me know! I'll be checking out your 5.5g sump/refugium system. If you enjoy building it...maybe we could work something out and I could buy one from you. I've been all over ebay...they don't sell anything in that size and I just don't have the desire to try to build it myself.

It would be nice to have a big enough refugium/sump that we could put the heater, skimmer, and all of that ugly stuff on it, rather than the main tank. Someone mentioned that somewhere...can't remember who/where or I would give you credit.
