Well, I made the plunge and got some duckweed, and java moss. I broke the java moss into 2 clumps, rubber banded one to a smooth rock, and the other to my fake log. I notice that there is a SMALL snail on the glass, maybe a little bit smaller than a pebble of gravel. Is this a snail i want, or should i remove him????? He came in the java moss. Thanks.

congrats on moving on to planted tanks!
If you can tell, what shape is the snail's shell? That's the biggest clue on what kind of snail it is. More than likely it's a ramshorn or pond snail.

It looks like it's head is round. The whole snail is like half the size of a piece of gravel.

id bet on pond. harmless, but useless for the most part as well. can and will overtake a tank if overfed. very common pest. i think its better to chuck him.

Ok, the point of the shell looks like it is going to the right. How would i crush it??

finger+ glass=crushed snail.
Although, if its a long shell, don't crush, good snail.

Im thinking it's a pond snail. The shell kind of 'cones' out to the back right side. So the point part is on the back right side. Does that make sense?? haha There is only 1 though. I read that they are male AND female. Maybe i read it the wrong way, but does this mean the snail can have little baby snails just by itself?? I still see him so should i just tank him out?

if the snail shell "cones out" then its a mts or malaysian trumpet snail...they are perfectly fine in your tank. Infact count it as a blessing since some people actually bid on aquabid for malaysian trumpet snails

I paid $5 for some, I'm just waiting for them to arrive though.
