Ok I'm planning to move from a 10gal to 16bow front for my small tank. I want to use laterite and then Flourish sand on top maybe tahitian moon. I may have cory's in there one day so I want something soft-belly safe. I know tahitian moon isn't I believe and im not sure about Flourish sand. Are there any other options for me and are there any other sub layer things you can recommend besides laterite? I really do not know much about laterite either so anyone know a bunch about it?

IMHO you are barking up the wrong tree here.

Based on my experience in order to appropriately use laterite 4" of material will be required in the bottom of your aquarium:

1" of uniformly graded 1/2" aggregate overlaid by
2" of laterite overlaid by
1" of uniformly graded 1/4" aggregate.

I have very little experience with small tanks but have read the literature for flourite black sand.

IMHO you should listen to bk828.

hmm maybe not then but I really wanna use more than just regular sand due to the sand having low amounts of elements like iron in it. Any other alternatives that I can use under the sand?

The reason that bk828 referenced fluorite black sand is that it is not "just regular sand". Please refer to:
http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/forumapc/science-aquatic-substrates/47437-fluorite-black-sand.html
http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_ViewItem~idproduct~SC5233.html

I do not know that a typical substrate as described in my previous post will not work but I doubt that it will for you and I believe that you will have "a real mess on your hands".
