I was able to get a decent shot of this one. Does this oto look...odd?

This one has been hiding out quite a bit lately, sticking to the back of the tank and under cover and when it finally came out it looks so bulgy. Wish I could get a look at that belly to see if it's eggs (unlikely, I suppose) or is it possible that it's sick? Parasites or constipated? Or maybe it's just well fed but the others seem to get wide not lumpy?

It is holding itself off the driftwood with it's fins but they don't show up.

The trick is to sneak up on them. Move in very slowly and they won't dart off.

lol i picture you creeping around in the dark room with the camera...good stuff

I think my main issue is that they're so small my camera can't focus on them properly. Seems like a perfectly acceptable excuse for an SLR to me!

Thanks, I was just a bit worried when I noticed this one going all Homer Simpson on me. The others are nice and chubby too but still have the flat bellies...there is no need to worry about these guys going hungry I guess.

I even abandoned my algea farm idea. With our new lights we're having no trouble at all feeding these guys AND we added a couple of snails to boot. I'm still scraping algae off the tank frequently. They seem to prefer the new growth algae, once it gets too long they leave it to me to clean up :-)

That is a fantastic shot! I really love my old Nikon digital P&S and have not had a single complaint about it until now. Even on the "Close Up" setting it can't focus on my otos. Boo!

One thing IME, is that aquatic photography can really bring and otherwise decent camera and photographer to his/her knees! lol. My ol' 1.3MP takes excellent shots outdoors and probably about as good as most any p&s out there now if shrunken down to the same resolution, but it is so much more difficult to get good fish pics.

Autofocus isnt always a good thing, I often use manual (but many cameras dont have that feature of course). I also found on my new S5 that the autofocus assist lamp would actually through the focus off up close, since it would not hit directly on the target at such short distances, so the focus was always off. I turned that feature off and AF works pretty decent now.

I suppose though if you cant fix the AF problem, if half pressing the shutter on your camera locks the focus than just press it half way and then move the camera back or forward to manualy make the focus correct.
