Hi
I'm new at this, although I had an aquarium when I was a kid, a short while ago I decided I wanted to get back into it.
I've set up a 30L small aquarium with some plants and I've put in 2 goldfish.
I've gradually heated it as well so accomodate tropical fish, now I want some tropical fish but dont know what kinds to put in.
I know, for example, swordtails and goldfish dont go together unless you want them to eat the poor little goldfish...
Any ideas?
Well unforntunatly you really can't mix goldfish and tropical fish at all. Goldfish like cooler temps, maybe 70F at max while many tropical species would like to see mid to high 70's F. Plus a 30L aquarium may seem plenty big for goldfish but these are fish that can grow 46 cm or larger if given the proper space.
If it is at all possible I would see if you could take the goldfish back to the store and exchange them for some nice smaller tropical fish. A perfect choice would be platys which grow to a good size but don't need a big aquarium to thrive in. Plus they are colourful like swordtails and goldfish and are very hardy.

Agree. Mixing cool water fish with tropicals is setting yourself up for some problems. Goldfish belong in large tanks with lots of cool water, and surface agitation. And--they would be more likely to eat the platies or swords than the other way around.
well thats not nice then... :(
what am i gonna do with the goldfish? I dont wanna take'em back

If you can locate someone with an outdoor garden pond, they may be willing to take the goldfish. If not, multpile tanks is the only option--one for the goldies, and one for tropicals.
Please note that putting them in someone's contained, maintained pond is not the same as dumping them in a local water way. Such introductions can cause serious problems, and are illegal in Autralia. Not saying you were considering it, but my personal soap box. ;)

It's hot and humid down here in Florida. If my pond goldfish had 70 degree F water -- they'd think they are on vacation! :D
Yeah but what if I dont want to get rid of them? I like them... :(

Amen to that, hebdizzle! I'd love to have multiple tanks, and I encourage any aquarist to get as many as they feasibly can!!! :)

What's scary is how long I've been (back) in the hobby, and how many tanks I want to have...maybe I can figure out how to utilize the money from a mortgage to get more tanks once I leave school...:)
is a fish room what i think it is? a room with heaps of tanks? coz that sounds like a bit too much to me, i mean, i like to keep my fish tank in the living room where i can enjoy it, but what am i going to do with a fish room? move my lounge & tv in there and live there?
i dont get it...

It is what you think it is...I'm looking forward to mine when I can afford a new house and to have a wonderful fish room!!!
why dont you just dump your house and move in to the local pet shop then? :p

hehehe, that's a good question...the fish there would be happy for my presence (and my work cleaning the tank...) and I'd be happy there, too. Now, after I graduate, there's a chance that I might just open my own store, but I'd have to have some financial backing and a legitimate market!

I wish! I am a math major going for my BS (or BA, haven't decided yet) in that subject. I might go for an Ichthyology masters/doctorate if anyone would take me into such a program...

Someone who works with me, (at the Pet Store,) showed me an article that details an experiment someone tried. Apparantly, Cichlids get along buitifully(dikshinary) with Koi and other goldfish in a pond, (providing that no one can eat each other.) This is in the summer, by the way. Apparently the fish had no arguments.
But that's neither here or there...I don't think anyone could enjoy a 30 Gallon Goldfish tank, and I don't think you could fit even a pair of cichlids in there in addition.
