I'm starting college at the end of the month. On the housing requirements a max. of a 12 gallon aquaium is allowed. I was just wondering if any type of "shark" would work in that size tank or what other interesting creature you might suggest???

A single shark would be comfortable in there as the only fish for a while, but not more than a year--they will all get to about 4+ inches and be very aggressive in such a small tank.
I would look into dwarf gouramies, licorice gouramies, or apistos. With a pair of either, you could also have a trio of bottom feeders like cories, and a school of smaller tetras--the pencil fish are neat looking, and wouldn't outgrow the tank.
I would look into the hardy fish of the world. Ones that can survive the mishaps of dorm life much easier than others, and ones that would be able to go without the frequest water changes that might be missed during vacation periods.
These would include - white cloud minnows, platies, and bettas to name a few.
My ideal 12 gallon setup would have plants (perfect for helping to filter the water) a light on a timer, 1 male betta, 5-7 white cloud minnows, and 3-5 cory catfish. The less often you could do a water change the fewer fish you would want to have in there.
You really want to stay away from the big bodies fish like dwarf plecos, sharks and goldfish due to the fact that they tend to over produce waste and in such a small space things get back quickly.

John,
Are you getting the 12 gallon eclipse setup?
I would try a planted tank with maybe a trio of Guppies and some cories. :)
