WHats the worst thing that'd happen if I put goldfish into a tropical tank? They are comets and I reckon they wouldnt look too bad...

Goldfish produce copious amounts of waste.

They are bred for cooler water, and might have trouble getting enough O2 in a tropical tank.

What's in that tank? How warm is this tank in question? Also, how often are they fed, and how large is the tank?

Remember that Comets can get to be 12-24" if not stunted, and they produce more waste (when properly fed) than many comparably-sized tropicals.

Its a 30 litre tank at about 24 degrees Celcius with live plants and all that. I just want to put a few neon tetras, a few zebras, a couple of catfish etc. Its not like I'm putting in any gouramis, chiclids or any other fancy things... I dont see why there should be any problems.

30 L is a little too small for Comets...even a single one needs almost 4 times that. They will be stunted, but would probably make an agreeable community member for the short term...as long as you have a long term answer to their housing, I won't discourage this community too much. :)

Thanks.

I do intend to get a bigger tank for the tropicals and leave the goldfish in their current tank, and maybe who knows, might get them a bigger one if they grow too big.

they will probably eat/kill all your plants and they will produce too much waste the neons might die. -john

Once they get big enough the comets will be very grateful to you for all the live food (neons, zebras etc.) and fresh plants :). Then they will start to complain about having no room to move, and begin to look misshapen and stunted :(.

At tropical temperatures they will need more food and produce more waste while requiring more oxygen and they will grow so fast you wouldn't believe  You will be doing water changes every 2-3 days just to keep things stable.

Why not buy them the bigger tank (as big as you can afford/have room for ) and enjoy them for what they are - beautiful exotic comets :)
