Is there a safe way to catch native fish without using a seine or a net (as far as I know you can only use hook for catching game fish in ny).

I was thinking something more along the lines of a barbless hook, but if there are safer alternatives please share.

The fish in the lakes around us are common yellow perch, sunfish, crappy, bullhead cats, eels, smaller pikes, trout, etc..

if you can find a skilled flyfisher, that might be a good option. the fly hooks are generally smaller than lures or bait hooks, and therefore easier to remove without damage. i say a skilled flyfisher because unlike an unskilled fisher, they should know how to handle gamefish so as to stress them the least, as they are used to catch-and-release methods.

Yeah, it's no big deal even with a barb I have caught fish for aquariums in the past . They heal real fast.
