Cichlids and Live plants

Hey guys, i have a 55gallon with some rather young cichlids i currently have java fern planted in there and is doing very well, are there any other plants that my cichlids wont make a meal out of? i really like the look of live plants and the fish love swimming in and around the java ferns leaves, any help would be much apreciated.

Depends on the cichlid - what type(s) do you have? Some will leave all plants alone, some will tear apart or uproot anything green in the tank.

Like sploke said it depends on the cichlids. Java fern and vals are good starts for experimenting with...

Most SA/CA Cichlids will up root and shred the plants. It's natural for cichlids to dig in the gravel (create pits) this causes plants to be up rooted, and some times damaged by the fish.

My Java ferns and Amazon swords have been doing great in my 100 and 55 african(malawi) cichlid tanks. I lost any plant that had small leaves that fit in their mouths. They haven't dug up any roots thnce they can basically swim under the leaves I'm guessing.

what fish you looking at? angels and apiostos or rams would work.

Angels were great when I had them in my 55 with plants. When I changed it over to cichlids, all the grass and smaller plants became a 120 dollar salad, lol.
