I would like to add some Red Higrophilia to my tank. I have a 55 with 2x54 watt lighting; so close to 2 watts/ gallon. I have read that red plants require more light and may not work in moderately lit tanks. Green hygro it seems would be fine, does this hold true for the red version as well? I do not currently have CO2, though I may look into it. I have hornwort, and would prefer it not grow any more than it does ( about 12 inches/ week ).

To get the nice pink leaves you need more light most likely. Tropica describes the light requirement for it as high to very high. However, if you get this plant, as it nears the surface you should get some nice color on the top.

Red pigmented plants are less efficient producers of chlorophyll than are green pigmented plants.

Due to the above and as has been previously stated a significantly greater intensity of light is required for red pigmented plants.

Many red pigmented plants will revert to green pigment under less than sufficient light.

I just asked this question on thebarrreport. I got this for an answer stressing a plantwill bring out the reds, limiting nitrate to 2-5ppm, not dosing nitrate for a week(stressing), red spectrum bulbs.
