I just received 12 beautiful turbo snails from Fosters' and Smiths', however it appears as though my big daddy hermit crab has taken a liking to ambushing my poor snails as they try to clean up the algae that is all over my live rocks. What should I do with him? I've already beat him off the snails thrice, and have him sequestered in the net. I'm afraid he may have to be removed :(

Do you have a sump you can keep him in? Are there extra big shells for him to choose from that don't have a snail in them? Is he getting enough to eat?

unfortunately the sump is a work in progress at the moment, and yeah there are plenty of big shells, the little bugger just seems to have a bloodthirst for snails :(

That's exactly why I don't have hermit crabs in my tank anymore.

My largest hermit crab would always attack my other hermits, there may be one left from about 5 or 6 crabs to begin with. It all stopped once he picked up a new shell, but I think it took a day or two for him to find and pick one. I had dropped about 15 shells in of various sizes, is it in an accessible/favourite part of the tank for the hermit?, does he look too big for his shell? are there lots of shells for him to choose from?

Is the big daddy the type of crab? such as Zebra, blue legged, scarlet?

Bare minimum....what would I need to keep him alive until the sump is built...I'm thinking 2 weeks max.

I have a large xanthid crab (frank) living in a small maybe 10 litre tank on a shelf in my kitchen and has been for a fair few months maybe 6+.
All i did originally was to keep doing 100% water changes with the old display tank water when i did a water change having placed in some small pieces of live rock.
There is no filtration and no water movement and hes doing fine.
Since i have brought new live rock and feed him small frags of coral.

How big is your tank? I have around 30 hermits all different kinds with several empty shells and I've never seen anything like that happen I have two very large hermits a white leg and a blue leg and they seem to wrestle for shells but they never change into the new ones are you sure he's eating the snails? Mine are curious they get into everything but if he's chomping the snails toss him its not worth it to loose all your snails besides crabs are cheap toss him :) haha its great to play god muhaha

Why is that if its not expensive its ok to treat it with no respect yet a fish being badly housed or cared for and the bad / inexperence keeper gets it with both barrels.
Hell just kill the thing why not...............
