This may be a silly question...but what is a good way to apply an aquarium background? I bought a plain vinyl one but am not sure how to attach it to the tank. Please help! Thanks.

I use double sided tape...it does the trick.

I just use regular tape

simple scotch tape, cut the background to fit, tape it to the top and bottom trim
If you want you can use Vaseline or a soapy water spray and a squeegee to make the background actually stick to the glass

Not so long ago I asked the same question. What a variety of answers I got. One thing that I didn't do, only because I just used black tape before I got all the responses, was to use oil before taping. Some people use Pam. It helps to keep it adhered and to keep the background smooth and uniform over time. I wish I had tried it. Good luck!

I use tape.

BUT, I've been unhappy with that result. why? because any drips of water that fall back and get behind the background cause it to stick to the glass in the spots that got wet, but the rest of the background is still loose, and it becomes visually apparant in the tank. the places where the background is stuck on with water look vibrant and clear, like you'd expect the background to look... the places that are dry look a bit dulled, and less colorful.

I'd go the oil/water spray/pam/vaseline route if at all possible. it will look way better, especially in the long run

I tried the oil method and it ripples and lifts up at the edges in a few days. I conclude that no method is going to be perfect except a can of paint.

I've bought and tried that product. It's nothing but oil. Baby oil does the same thing for alot cheaper. Not that I'd recommend oil at all. It looks very good for about a day.

I saw this on another thread, sounds like a great idea and from his photos looks great too. Should resist the water from getting behind the background in between the glass. Haven't tried it but he inspired me to try.
