I'm thinking about trying my hand at a simple planted tank and was going to pick up a 10 gallon in the next week or two. I'm hoping to keep from having to cycle the new tank. If I dropped an extra HOB on my current tank, how long should I expect it to take to be seed?

whats a HOB? sorry for the stupidity, I'm new :P
Also I just started a tank as well a 75 gallon, and I need to start my cycle as well.
Tanks been up like 9 hours and the kids are already chiming in, Daddy when are we putting the fish in. lol

You can do that creoguy. You could also move some of the media over from the existing filter to the new tank to get things started. Or some decor. And then just lightly load.

HOB = Hang On Back filter

Running the extra filter on your existing tank will spread it's bacteria colony over a larger area, and when you move it, you may see a small cycle there.

I recently purchased a 10 gal for a planted tank...I just put the new filter media in the other tank's filter for about a week, then moved it over with a bit of material from one of the other filters and that did the trick. I saw a slight increase in nitrites for a few days, but that was under .25 and resolved quickly. The longer you leave the new filter or media in a cycled tank or the more media you use from a cycled filter the better, and it will be less likely that you see a mini cycle.

Sounds good... I'm leaning towards a Iwagumi type tank with some dwarf hairgrass and Hemianthus 'Cuba' setup as a carpet. Gotta love new obsessions! :grinyes:
