Well, Today I was in Wal-mart and saw a freshwater kit with a 29 gallon tank for 97 dollars. I also saw the same kit but with a 55 gallon tank for around 170. Well, I bought my freshwater kit with a 20 gallon for $174 at a fish specialist store. I thought that it was a difference in quality, but as I thought about it, I wondered how much extra quality did I really received. Did I make the wrong choice or am I just being paranoid?

I got a 28 gal bow kit for $99 before discounts, and the 55 gal kit for $152 before discounts, both from Petsmart, to give you an example comparison. I wouldn't buy a tank from a LFS, they are generally more expensive. You should stick to chain pet stores, they usually have the most stock and have better sales when trying to get rid of said stock.

*EDIT: Did you make the right choice? That's up to you to decide...would it have been the right choice for me, no...way over priced.

What brand of tank involved? Heater? Useless accessories included? The filter and heater for a 55 vice a 29 should raise the price.

It is hard to judge the price difference without more detail.

I get the kit because I know how to work the system, which is why I exchange the stuff in the kit at regular retail price and then get new stuff at the pricematched price...gaining money, or saving money on the kit, all how you look at it.

I bought a couple of 10g tank kits about 6 months ago to compare. One was an All Glass kit from Petco the other was a kit from Walmart. The tanks were indistinguishable from each other and the lid and filter from the Walmart kit were actually better. The lid was heavier plastic and hinged while the one from All Glass was really flimsy.

I agree with others, it depends on what you ended up with. If you decide that you need to switch out certain eqipment anyways it may have been worth just buying everything separate...

It may seem that way, but I'm not sneaky about it at all. They know it came in a kit and wasn't price matched, so they have to exchange it at retail price. The thing with Petsmart is, even with items on sale and price matched, they still make a lot of money, so they don't care.

Wow, that's dirty. It's people like you that make me despise working in retail. Rationalizing that they still "make money" and therefore "don't care" is utter crap. There's a serious lack of integrity these days..

It's still not on the up and up.

It is not an opinion. What you are talking about is FRAUD.

Then I suppose that I didn't explain myself very well if you think that it is fraud, or you are unaware of what fraud actually means. It is store policy to exchange an item at regular retail price if it comes in a kit, and I exchange items from the kit that I don't want. If Petsmart had a problem with this, or deemed it to be fraud, would the manager not say something at the time of the exchange when they are doing the price change? It was a store employee that suggested that I do this when I bought my first kit, so that he could get me to buy the kit....and now I do it every time.

I guess I worded my original post in a way that looked bad.
