Thanks to all the advice on this forum, I am well on my way. Just want to get comments. I am cycling the tank with a few guppies. I read up on cycling and I will be sure to keep up with the cycle procedure. My kids and wife were freaking out because we had such a nice tank with nothing in it. I also put in some ramshorn snails, pond snails, and ghost shrimp (3) that the LFS gave me for free. Hopefully the snails can breed a little until I get the puffers in.

I plan on keeping 4-6 puffers, an oto or 2, and the guppies if they can take the abuse. Also ghost shrimp and any snails that can manage not to get eaten.

47 gallon tank, 18"x19"by36"deep.
Substrate is about a 50/50 mis of fluorite and large river pebbles.
Also some unidentified slate like rock from the landscape supply yard
Millennium 3K filter
Lighting is 2 Exo-Terra hoods with a total of 102 watts of PC lighting
150 watt heater with temp at 76
I am using Prime for the water and also Stability to help the cycle along.
PH is neutral for now, haven't tested ammonia yet.
I am just feeding crappy food for now, do the guppies need anything special?

The plants are, on the right, Jungle Val; and on the left; some unidentified plant the LFS gave me for 1.99 because they were out of Corkscrew Val, anyone here know what it is?. I like them!

One question i have: Would it be a bad idea to run the wet/dry air injector thingies on the M3K filter for just part of the day? They are kind of loud, but I am not sure if bacteria can handle swings in oxygenation like that.

Another question..is the light right for the plants, or do I need more? Less? the LFS guy said maybe less would be better.

Please feel free to comment on anything.

Here is a pic! It's still a bit cloudy here, I am working on clearing it up by putting chunks of polyfiber in the filter and changing them out when they trun brown after an hour or so. Next time I will be sure to rinse the dang fluorite!

I don't think you have too much light at all. If anything, you will have to choose plants carefully due the the difficulty that lighting a very tall tank presents.

Good. It'll really get expensive to push lots of light down there. Hopefully I'll find plants that will work out.
