She's a Chilean rose tarantula. I just let her out (I hope she is a female since they live longer) a few minutes ago and she's already exploring everything. She's much more active than I expected.
And yes, I got a a screen lid that latches down pretty securely, plus the light sits top of the lid. :grinyes:
She has big fangs.

wow!! you know something, those are something I have always wondered about yet never was brave enough to get myself one.
I guess naming her Charlotte would be too "obvious", huh
how long do they live?

charlotte is my vote... she is beautiful.
ive had a couple rose hairs myself, and from what ive researched, they are a ground species, so more ground space with a simple hide spot (like a half log) is better than trees and sticks to climb on. but a lot of space is not good either. 5 gallons, i think, is pushing the limit for too much. small spaces make them feel secure. they cannot see well, so less space, but enough to move around, is good.. :)
and, if it is in fact a female, she will probably get a little too hefty to climb, lol.
also, clothing can hurt the hooks on their little feet, so if you have her out, let explore her on your skin, or solid surfaces, not your shirt. :)
good luck, and enjoy your pretty little friend.

I kind of like the name "Kaliyah" which means "Slayer Of thousands" in the Hindu faith and "beloved" or "sweetheart" in arabic... My beloved slayer of a thousand creepy crawlies! lol

Thanks for the info. I'd read that they shouldn't climb too much, but the tank is only 20 gallons. She has plenty of room to explore, but plenty of plants to hide under too. I honestly didn't think that a 20H would be too large for her. She seemed interested in exploring everything, but she didn't seem freaked out. I have a 5.5 gallon that I could clean out for her if I have to, but I just wanted her to have a cool habitat rather than a plain tank. I guess feeding time will tell- if she can't find her prey after a couple of tries, then she will move.:)
As for handling her, trust me, it's a non-issue, LOL. Both myself and the BF are still kinda freaked out by her, and we just enjoy watching her from a distance. I don't think she'll be coming out to play- I'm assuming that spiders don't really enjoy being handled anyway so it works out for all of us. ;)
BTW- I like the name Charlotte, and I'm leaning toward it at this point, but my mind isn't made up yet.

As for naming it, I like Charlotte too haha:) I really don't like spiders because my brother used to chase me with big wolf spiders when i was little but this one is interesting. I personally would never have a spider as a pet but its still a cool pet. Most people don't have spiders so its a nice switch up from a cat or dog. Good luck with her.

Aww, she's a cutie.. in case you didn't know, don't mist her cage, just put a shallow dish for her to drink from.. they hate being misted.
Males live for years.. females live alot longer, I want a male.
