View Full Version : cycling 2nd tank
Yeah! My betta, Sparky, just got a new home! He's moving on up from a 1/2 gal. bowl to an Eclipse Hex 5! We plan on moving to a new house soon (within a few weeks) so I think I may wait to set up the new tank until after we move. My question is this: will it help the cycle if I put the itty-bitty Bio-Wheel for the hex into my established 29 gal. aquarium? Any additional advice would certainly be appreciated, as well.

Yea, that would help a lot. You would get a pretty descent amount of bacteria to grow on it in a few weeks. I would place it somewhere close to the filter. What kind of filter do you have now?
My 29 gal has a Penguin Bio-Wheel 170. Do I need to anchor the new Bio-Wheel, or can I just let it bobble around in the aquarium?

You could let is just float, but it would probably be better to let it sit right infront of the filter output. I would try to anchor it buy the filter so that the whel can spin around. Maybe you can take the bio wheel off of the penguin and out the little one on the filter. I did that when I was cycling my 72g tank with 2 emperor 400 filters. I had a little 10g tank with a penguin 125, so, I took the wheel off of the penguin and put it on one of the spots of one of the emperors and left it for a day. I let the emperor bio wheel float in the tank.

No problem, let us know how everything turns out.
Alright, can't just put the new Bio-Wheel on the 170 filter since the new one is much smaller (don't know why I didn't think of this before). Anyway, I have the new one floating in the tank in front of the filter output. That will have to do.
