View Full Version : Tank mates for a Jaguar
For the last month we have been the happy owners of a Jaguar Cichlid. He has no tank mates. I was wondering if it would be ideal to get one for him. He is in a 65 gal tank. I thought about a pleco, but this guy is so mean, I don't know if a large pleco could survive him.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

You could try a bristlenose pleco with lots of hiding places. If you have a male Jag, it will eventually outgrow the 65gal tank.
I haven't never seen a bristlenose larger than a few inches. How big do they get?

I think about 4-6" or so...and they do a bang up job on keeping a tank algae free.

We were having a discussion somewhere else on the board about the meanest Cichlid...you may not want to go that far...How big is that Jaguar? You could even put another Jaguar, (of the opposite sex,) in the tank, and get some breedin'.

65g tank will not be enough space for 2 jags.

ehhh 65g and a jag doesn't mix well. Especially not with tankmates. Need an upgrade or a ship out one of the two.

I read up a lot on Jaguars because i was going to get one (it never panned out in the end to my disapointment) All my reading indicated they are not the most tolerant of fish because they are activaly predatory in the wild. You CAN put a male and female jag together but there is a very good chance the male well beat the poop out of the female trying to get some.
Your guy should fill that tank by himself pretty fast
im so jealous :o
What are the deminsions of a 65 gallon tank? Say them out loud and then subtract fourteen to sixteen inches (female v male). Then take what is left, and remembering how fast a big fish can swim, think about the fact that jags are piscivores and will gut any fish that gets within a five foot radius (according to Paul Loiselle the average area a full grown cichlid will defend in the wild). Now, which fish do you think you can add?
This is how I talk myself out of adding fish I really want to my tanks. HTH

That's getting creative scott, haha.
Just curious, but couldn't someone get more than one fish in a 65 Gallon Tank? That seems a little, well, whack.

Its probably 36"x18"x24".
Well, I was just wondering if it would be ideal to add a tankmate for the Jag. He is about 9-10 inches. And he is very intolerant of us even approaching the tank. Even to feed him!
I don't have the dimensions of our tank, but,I'll get them to ya asap.
So you know, my hubby brought him home without any research or my opinion, heck, my knowing about it. It was a surprise! Sometimes, I just don't know what he is thinking.

Since thats a male jag, you will most definatly need a larger tank if its not a 6' tank at least 72"x18". And whats so whack about keeping a fish by itself rocketman? I wonder if you've ever seen a jag or dovii in action before? You think piranhas are destructive hah. You haven't seen anything yet. And thats with just one fish.
