Hi, I have a HOB aqua-tech 30-60 (wal mart brand). Lately it has been making some weird noises, almost like a grinding noise. Anyway, I have taken it off, cleaned it and put it back on and it still makes noise. Funny thing is is that it seems to be working fine,,just louder. Any suggestions for maintainance or ideas of what may be wrong with it.

Probably the impeller assembly needs to be cleaned.

Ok thanks,..kinda figured that, but is it easy to take apart..seems kinda of cheap. Well it is cheap. Can I take it off of the intake tupe?

I've been able to take off the intake and clean the impeller on all filters I've owned...it's really necessary so I can't think of a reason that they'd deny you access on this filter. Give it a try, if it breaks, just get a better filter. HOBs aren't expensive. :)

So apparently, the Aqua-Tech filter is identical to the Penguins. Just lift out the intake and you will have access to the impeller, just lift that out as well.

If cleaning the impeller doesn't stop the noise...
The pin that the impeller is on has a longer plastic piece on it below the impeller, and 2 rubber pieces, one at each end of the pin. Apply some pressure to those on both ends of the pin so that the plastic piece is pushed up as close to the impeller as it should be.
(I had one get a bit loose before, and it got noisy like that. That plastic piece turns the impeller but it has to be close enough to grab it else it can make noises when its grip on the impeller slips.... sounds like a grinding noise.)

I took it out,,and apart and cleaned it. It was dirty, but nothing too crazy. Anyway, I put it back in and it is a bit better but still not the way it was. Any other suggestions. If not I think I can return it as it hasn't been a year yet and I still have the receipt.
