I have plants that I grew from bulbs and I have a plant I bought at a LFS in like a pot/holder with the roots wrapped in like a cardboard type material. When I unwrapped this plant I think I ripped all the roots off, it hasn't died but it hasn't flourished either, its just there.

I just purchased another plant packaged the same way. I wanted to ask here first before I unwrapped it.

What is the proper way to get it out without killing it and what is the best way to plant it in the tank?

Gently unwind the roots, grab the plant near the crown (where roots & leaves come together) & try to pull & wiggle it out. You can cut the pot with scissors if needed. Then carefully pick off the insulation-like packing material & vermiculite. Running water can help.

Remove dead leaves & trim really long roots. When you plant keep the crown just above the final substrate level. It's easier to plant a bit deep & gently pull up to the right height. Small rocks to hold the roots can help until it gets established.

Some roots are small while for example my Marble Queen Radican Sword had some pretty big roots which came OUT of the plastic holder! well it takes some time it took me about 15 to 20 minites to cut and unwind all the roots in the holder remember patience is the key. If your plants roots are inside of the material there in just slowly rip the material apart and before that take the whole plant out gently and add water to it to ease that job off.
