hello all.living where i do its very hard to just go into a store and buy aquarium related equipmentv.very slim pickings in the ma/pa stores.petsmart is iffy sometimes, but thank goodness p/s does a better job than the ma/pa unfortunately.
when i set my tanks up the stores had colored gravel only....4 different shops and not a one had the kind of gravel i wanted.thanks goodness for wmart as they did have the gravel i wanted.
their is nothing wrong with my gravel but i have fell in love with the various substrates that are used for planted tanks.i really like the color of flourite.my tanks dont have any plants at the moment.
flourite hopefully can be used in a non planted tank as that is what i really want to know.any of you used this in your tanks? im sure it will do well with plants and hoping it will do well in a non planted tank.but plants will come later!
my water here in kansas is very hard and alkaline.any of you notice whether or not flourite changed your water parameters? i know it will be quite a job changing over to flourite but will do one or two tanks a week till it gets done. thanks for any and all replies.allwet
I have used it in a non planted tank and it works just fine.

See, I read ma/pa as the northeastern coast too....Massachusetts/Pennsylvania. And was wondering how you couldn't find a decent LFS. But now knowing your in Kansas it makes more sense.
Why not going to a home improvement store, farming supply store, or gardening store for something that might look like the expensive planted tank soil. Seems like a waste. Or ordering normal gravel on line.

The downside is that flourite will be rather expensive, kind of a waste of money if you aren't using it for a planted tank.
It may be worth it to you, but as an alternative, try looking at non-aquarium related landscaping places. Many people find excellent natural looking gravel from places like Home Depot in the landscaping department.
Just a thought.

yes it will be used for plants(just not right away at the get go).the stuff you guys and gals have in bigger cities is just not available here in kansas.my other hobbies which are many with one being model railroading...its almost impossible to walk into a hobby shop that stocks the major lines in model rring.the majority of stuff i have to order through mailorder.BTW thanks for all the suggestions

drfostersmith.com doesn't (or didn't) charge extra freight on substrates, just the usual S&H. You might check, with shipping costs it was cheaper for me.
