Well, Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is about to be rolled out to the consumers in the following month (March), and the question arises, should you install it??

Simple answer is yes. From being part of the Windows Vista Beta team for Microsoft, i've tested all builds of this service pack and i have been very impressed with it. It has added some more functionality, better security, stablily on older systems, greater data transfer speeds across a network, and faster operating system speed when running the new Aero interface. This all adds up to a better experience for us end users.

I've taken the latest info on program compatibility from Knowledge base article 935796 and pasted them below to give people a heads up in case you are currently using one of these products, as changes/updates will have to be made to ensure a smooth service pack install post install.

The following info has been taken from: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935796

Ahhhhhh...Boot the computer in safe mode, go to add/remove programs....put a tick in " Show Updates ", and remove the updates one by one and test untill you get the system back running correctly...Then, when windows update runs itself, just do not install the update that was causing the problem...If you do this, and you pin point the problem update, PM me the update number and i'll look into it mate...

wish i could do that, but the computer still runs the pre-boot windows update even though i boot in safe mode.. no matter the mode, it runs it.

i've tried safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe moe with CP, last known good, etc etc.. every option and it was the same.

Hmmm...odd, it should not be able to run windows update itself in safe mode, the service is manual or disabled in this mode.....if memory serves me correctly....how many options are there on the boot menu when press F8 to get the boot menu up???

I get

Safe mode
Safe mode with Networking
Safe mode with Command Prompt
Boot Windows Normally

(sorry for turning this into a troubleshooting thread.. perhaps it will help someone else if they get the same issue)

i presume your selecting safe mode only?

J double R

i've selected all of them, and it does the same for each one. after the initial windows screen with the dumb little scrolly loading thing, and then instead of going to the password logon screen, it starts the update. (something like "configuring updates, stage 3 of 3, please wait) then it finishes, reboots, and goes right back to the update cycle again.

over and over and over and over.

Can you boot from another disk, like a CDR or USB drive, into safe mode? Then set a restore point?

J double R
02-21-2008, 12:10 PM
haven't tried anything yet except safe mode off the original disk. not much time, really. that's a good idea in theory though.. i wonder if i can boot straight from the CD that i have.

the fact that it wouldnt go into safe mode really threw me off, as that was the first thing that came to mind for me and should have made for an easy fix.

Ok....boot from your Windows Vista DVD...Select repair from the menu, this will then provide you with the system restore feature....Step back to a day prior to when the problem occured...This will restore all the system files and system state for you...

very good.... now to get more than 2 hours off in a 24 hour day and i will. LOL... been leavingwork at 5, scarfing dinner and getting to the hospital by 630 for a 12 hour medic shift, then back to work at 7 am. :p

hey clawlan, if you wanna get rid of one of those free copies, I could take one off your hands...

Reefscape
02-21-2008, 12:23 PM
do the above, when you get time ;) and let me know how you get on...Is this Vista Service pack 1 you installed here by the way??? the stage 3 of 3 is not a normal update message on vista....If this is the case, then you have installed a release candidate version of the service pack, as its not available yet via windows update...there are plenty of copies of Service Pack 1 available to download on the net via places like Bittorrent, however, the version number is not the correct number for the Release To Manufacturing disk image of SP1....

Reefscape

A little note to others too...Do not download the versions of this service pack via the bittorrent networks...Its an unfinished product, I.E the version people can get at the moment is not the finished article, it is just a refresh build...So, stay clear from it....

i didn't install anything manually.. this was all done via automatic updates. i reviewed them, and as far as i could see it wasnt servicepack 1...
