Wow, those are amazing. I love the last 2 in particular. #9 reminds me of a sw peppermint shrimp. Are these Caridina or Neocaridina sp.? I see you got the pics from MFK, is there more info on them over there?

No info there? darn.
Those are some really really really neat shrimp. I can already tell that they will be tooo much for my wallet. I mean 6.99 retail or cherries off big box sites. 1.00 here is nice. But I wonder if these AMAZING shrimp breed as easily as cherries?

If they do, you can be pretty sure the prices will come down in short order.

o of course the cost will go down. But I bet you- just my luck that they are difficult to breed. Or possibly we'd have them already.
I cant imagine that on MFK or whoever posted em' that there was'nt any info.
Some are really sick and some look like a cherry and a amano.
same stones and grass tho? I wonder if they dont interbreed? And the #10 looks berried? and maybe thats a egg under #11?
you can tell im drooling all to much. lol

planet inverts has them for 25-50.00 each!!!!! and they are related to cherries and found in 80* avrg water with a PH of like 7.6-8 with no co2. hard for planted tanks. found a good deal at guitarfish.com.
They dont know if one of the species requires a "sponge" to live with and hide in. And one is really easier than the rest and some have eggs and hatched them already. Also some are kept together and there not sure on interbreeding yet.

These shrimp have not yet shown much success breeding in the home aquarium. But here is what I know about them...
- They prefer water that has a high ph but is generally soft. (Kind of difficult to achieve)
- They prefer water that is slightly warmer than our normal tanks
- They come from extremely deep lakes
- There are no (or VERY few) natural predators in their natural lakes
- They are more like Caridina than Neocaridina, but they are all unidentified species so there may be a new genus (who knows)
These shrimp came to the hobby for the first time back in 2005, but there was no success with them back then, but there have been great strides since then so there is a chance that there will be more success with them this time.

Well I have researched the lakes they come from. They are some of the deepest in the world due to their location near tectonic plates. The shores may be shallow, but the lakes are not!

I see Ryan at Planet Inverts has these available and he will start shipping them on March 10! They are all listed as wild caught Caridina sp.

It would really be a bad thing if people exausted the natural supply to make a few bucks only to find out that they won't breed in captivity. The shrimp are only in 1 lake in the world? How are "they" catching them? what are they doing to the environment? What is anyone doing to ensure people don't exploit the shrimp and their lake?
FtwayneFish
02-23-2008, 11:36 AM
They are prolly doing "nothing". where did the Indians go?
StereoKills
02-23-2008, 1:38 PM
Remember that everything is wild caught at first. It is up to hobbyists for the most part to ensure that we pursue captive breeding to preserve the species in the wild.

O I understand that after we get them or want them its best to purchase from "us" than the websites or big box stores, but thats after the fact and the lake would already be "dipped" into?

Wow, those are the most amazing animals I have ever seen. FW & SW fish, inverts... Move aside. I would set up my 75g just for these guys. I love that ebony one, and the second to last. A FW blood shrimp :grinyes:
Seriously, I would invest a lot to get some of those blackest of black shrimp in my 75g, with nothing else

Beautiful shrimp tienbm! Do you know how they breed?
By the way Msjink, I saw an auction on aquabid yesterday for 10 pieces of the sulawesi shrimp that tienbm has for $200. Quite expensive I think. I don't think I'll ever raise these. But I'm just telling you this just incase you want some. :D

I think I have #4 (or something that looks very similar). It was this clear color, but has changed to a greenish color over time (I assume because of the algae waffers I feed it).
Mine is growing and seems to be doing well in my tank. My tank has pretty high PH at the moment (around 7.8), but I'm looking to lower the PH to accomodate some other fish. Do you know around what PH this type of shrimp likes?

A German guy named George had already successfully breed them in his aquarium tank. For more information, you can visit the following URL.
