Tank center support snapped!

kjr928

Go fish yourself.
Feel my pain:

This morning, just as I was leaving for work, I noticed the center support on my 46g was snapped. It was not snapped last night when I did a water change.

I am very concerned because I am going away on vacation TOMORROW MORNING for 9 DAYS!!! A friend of mine will be fish-sitting.

With all the horror stories of tanks breaking and flooding the house, I am feeling really frantic about this - I cannot have this happen, I live in an apt building where I'm not supposed to have a tank over 10g. It will wreck my apt, and probably adjacent apts, and I will get the pants sued off me if something like this happens.

Any and all suggestions/advice is welcome and appreciated!!!!!!

There must be a reason why it snapped: weight, flaw in the support, mold... but be aware that now all of the weight is shifted to the corner supports. Those can give away at any time so you must reduce the water level of your tank at the minimum (maybe 50%) and look for a new stand that will properly support your 46G.

yep as kickin said I'd drain that tank quick before it breaks and you get 40+ gallons of water everywhere

Can I ask what kind of stand you're using? I just got a perfecto oak stand for my 30g this week, and was concerned that it only supports the ends too....

Is there anywhere else you can place the tank while on vacation? On the floor if nothing else?

i would be tempted to pick up a large tupperware and transfer everything to that (filter, substrate fish, etc) for while you are gone.

You could temporarily brace it from the outside with a piece of pipe and 2 clamps, available at Home Depot or a hardware store. The top is replaceable, but you'll likely have to order one from an lfs and wait for delivery.

A temporary fix until you can properly deal with the issue may be one of those extendable bar clamps. I have seen them from 1 foot in length to about 3 feet. It will be ugly but should work in the interm.

A quick fix would be ideal, but at this point there is nothing that can possibly be quick enough. I am leaving straight after work to my parents house, who are then driving me tomorrow morning to the airport.

So I contacted the company, and they said that it would be totally fine while I was away and not to worry about it at all. They said I should lower my water line down about 25-30% to take off the extra weight and order the support frame to put on when I get back.

I guess that's what I'll do, since I don't have much other choice.

fingers crossed good luck.

let us know the out come when you get back home from vacation.
