This guy i know is really into marian tanks a he might give me a 30l tank including every thing!

Ok yes thats to good to be true, so his plan is to breed some kinds of plants and he gets all the profit.
I think he said something about a Kenya tree, and some more stuff.
So my question is should i do this because i would like one but is there anything i should know?

Hahahahaha.. oh that was kinda funny. Wow, are you really in South Africa?

There is sooo much to know that I don't even know where to start. Even I just have a good grasp on reefs, but am far from an expert.

First, get a list of all the equipment that is coming with the tank, light, filters, rock, sand, etc and list that here and we can tell you which direction you need to go.

Softies are not all that difficult to grow so you will probably have good luck.. but read read, and read some more. Google and aquarium forums are your best friend. :)

1. Are you willing to do the work? Some daily, and more on a weekly or bimonthly basis?
2. Are you willing to read, read, and read some more?
3. Are you willing to pay for the additional load on your electricity bill?

Yes i do live in SA.
The important thing you guys must understand is that my friend is getting every thing for me so i must not worry about that.

Smily:
1. yes most of my day is to do with looking after my animals and i really like doing it.
2. No im not, i will do a bit of research but mostly my friend will tell me what to do.
3. Its only a small tank so it can't take that much?

Well, if it is an established tank already, and you are going to be doing the same thing as he was, growing softies, then I really don't think you will have any problems.

My only suggestions about reading in relation to softies, is read as much about Salt Water chemistry, what minerals are in the water, how to test, know when to add suppliments, if needed at all. That type of stuff.

Lighting isn't that big of a deal, and if he has already had success with the current setup, then that will be fine.

Power bill should be minimal. 1 heater, powerhead, and light. Here in California that tank would cost about $10 a month at the most. Not all that expensive.

I'm of the sort that if I was taking responsibility for animals I'd want to know as much about them as I could. I know enough to keep my tank going right now but I doubt I'll ever stop reading about this hobby because no matter how much I know about it there will always be a vast amount of information out there I don't have a clue about.
