Hi all, im thinking about getting my feet wet in sw slowly by starting with a ten gallon tank.

I want to know if a skimmer is an absolute must for a small tank because all the skimmers i see are like 4 ft tall and such.

are there any mini kinds that work well also?

Also, I will use a AC mini for filtration but it has been used for fw. Do I have to buy another new one or can I use that?

THanks

Always gotta throw out this one when I see a skimmer question. Definately a little more expensive than the first one mentioned, but I can't say enough good things about the Remoras. :)
Aqua C Nano Remora Protein Skimmer Features:
A miniature version of the popular Remora hang-on skimmer. Uses half the power of the regular Remora. The NANO is designed for tanks between 5-25 gallons and is powered by a Maxi Jet 900 pump. This is the first skimmer that is small enough to fit a nano-reef, while still yielding strong and dependable performance. The NANO measures 16" tall and 2.75" thick.

I'm surprised to see a recommendation for a Fission. They are often listed as the most disappointing nano tank purchase. You don't need a skimmer in a 10g. If you decide you want to get one I'd take a look at the new EuroReef skimmers that have just been released this month (I think). If you want to spend more than that the Tunze Nano Pack gets tremendous reviews (like anything Tunze it does cost more).

A 10g by the way isn't a typical starter tank for marine. It isn't unheard of and you can certainly find sucess with it but go into it knowing that it will be more work to keep stable than something larger.

Agreed, a 10G is definately a harder than average tank to keep stable vs something bigger. You will have to do daily top offs of freshwater to make sure your salinity doesn't swing too much due to evaporation. I have thought of setting up a 10G reef/10G sump but after thinking of just how much work it will be I decided against it, even though I have all the parts to set it up. My 29G is enough work already, I don't need anymore.

my ten year old daughter maintains a 10 gallon salt water its not that difficult. but like others have said it does require DAILY maintenance

Thats great! Sincerely I love to see kids involved in the hobby. I've been wanting to add books to my club library for many of the kids that come to our meetings. Have you run into any that are kid friendly?
