I came across this...does it sound ok for my tank (55g) they want 90bucks for it...
Seaclone 100 skimmer,, excellent condition.. Good for up to 100g.. I was ussing it in a 29gal.. and decided to upgrade.. Skimmer is only missing the pre-filter sponge.
If they used it in a 29 is that going to be to little for my tank even though it says up to 100g???
i'd keep looking. they're only about $110 new, so it's not a great deal. and, the seaclone is not a very good skimmer. i have one for my 55 gal, and it's nothing but frustrating. far better off to save up and buy a good one, or find one on e-bay or craigs list.

I agree with cmar.. Seaclones from what I have read are not that good of a skimmer.

you can get those for like 80 online, from everyone i talk to, avoid it. I would look around for a aquaC remora, you couild probably get one for the same price on ebay

I also recommend you look into the Octopus hang on skimmers.

Another vote for the 'AquaC Remora' here.
This is the beauty of this forum. Finding something you think you might want, getting advice from those you build relationships with, and avoiding a costly mistake.

LadyG with your size tank honestly you should probably look at the Octopus/ASM line. I don't know if they build a remora for your size tank as i typically see people using them in the 40 gallon range and it isn't a line I looked at. However since you are building a sump I'd make that a priority along with the skimmer and then you don't have to get a HOB and have all that stuff in/behind your DT tank you can put as much as you can in the sump. Right now I think I have to much in mine with the power heads, returns, overflow and now a float sensor so the tank won't overflow. (I'm getting ready for some extended stays out of town and have added an ATO and backup float in the tank to prevent issues)
Remora does make one suitable for a 55g, I considered it myself. But as you said Clown an insump skimmer would make more sense which is why I looked at their Urchin Pro line.

Ahh, yes I love this place....so the in sump skimmer is the way I want to go! I had decided this a while back...then somehow I ended up with thinking the HOB.....BLAH!
Does anyone remember what it was I wanted as a HOB?? OH...wait think I do, I was going to get a overflow box as a HOB!
Ok, anyway thanks everyone again!! I'll have you all pulling your own hair out by the time I'm done doing this!!

I've had great luck w/ a Euroreef skimmer. They are a bit pricier, but are really well constructed and easy to set up. If you can find the RS80 model on Craigslist or ebay it would be perfect for your size tank.

Can you post a linky so I can see a picture of the unit? Its great that they are using the same pump but the success of a skimmer is not just the pump it is the design of the skimmer housing itself. Does it look like an Octopus NW-110?

I agree with AMP it looks like an Octopus to me as well and I like their price. Supposedly they are just as good as models that are twice and three times the price. Only the sight with the link you posted says they are on backorder.

You must of been looking at the DMW 110, the one I have on there is the CVOCT-NW-110...do you think that one is ok...or one of the other ones??

That one works fairly well, but probably wouldn't be as effective as the other one. The other is recirculating, while the one you picked is not.

Hey, I have a new question about this skimmer....it says "Requires additional feed pump to supply 1 to 1.5 times the system volume per hour through the protein skimmer". .....what is that and do I need to order it at the same time???
clown-lover
03-03-2008, 11:07 PM
Most places sell the pump with the skimmer I thought. But what that would mean is with your 55 gallon tank and whatever the sump volume, you'll need that going through the skimmer per hour. The octopus skimmers are based of the ASM which is a needle wheel pump like the sedra's. But yeah I would double check with them what that "exactly" means.

Well, this is what it says....
Description: Octopus Model 110 Needle Wheel Recirculating Protein Skimmer. 4.29 inch diameter. 23.4 inches tall with model 1000 Octopus needle wheel impeller pump for aquariums up to 200 gallons. Requires additional feed pump to supply 1 to 1.5 times the system volume per hour through the protein skimmer. Footprint is 6 inches by 11 inche

it does! this is how recirc skimmer looks like
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b221/fkyounggs/recircnw110l.jpg
a pump is (both output and input is connected to the chamber body which is recirculating water inside)
and a regular skimmer will look like this

Hey that one also says.....In addition to this skimmer you will also need a feed pump to supply water to the skimmer. Are they talking about the return pump thing?
nycsicktank
03-04-2008, 12:21 AM
the reason for a feed pump is that the pump feeds water into your skimmer. without this, there is noway of feeding the water inside the skimmer. thats only for recirc skimmers.
for that 110, you can go for rio 800

you have order it separately. recirc skimmer are way better than standard skimmers (thats what everyone says in the forums exp: RC) in order for a skimmer to produce good dark color is having the bubbles in long contact in the chamber which is why recirc skimmer are for. hope i helped :o

Do you not have any way of feeding the skimmer directly? I have my Deltec hooked directly to my overflow, passing up a feed pump altogether. What kind of overflow do you have? Drilled or HOB?

I do not have a overflow yet...originally was going to drill but decided I will be going with HOB, do not really remember the type I was going to get it was one Clown had recommended. Anyway that was going to be my next purchase...that and the return pump (I think).

Ok, that's fine. I wouldn't to it with an HOB, anyway. I was just wondering, as if you could, it would save you a pump, some heat, and a bit of electricity. That is another reason I like recirc skimmers.

Ah, thank you for trying to help me save!!! I had a guy offer to drill for me, and was going to do it...but I didn't know what I would of done with the stuff in the tank while he was doing it..and I already was getting more rock and stuff so I decided to heck with it and went the HOB way.

The overflow I recommended since she had water and stuff in the tank was the lifereef overflow. I have it on my tank and have never had it build a bubble or loose its syphon. I turn my system off daily for feeding and have never had it fail.
